A bad beat is a hand in which a very good one gets beaten by a long shot or a hand that should have been folded early on . an ace-high straight on the flop. on the button, seat no. 5 was dealt kh-jh -- a great drawing hand. if the flush didn't develop, he had two high cards plus a good shot at a high straight. lots of ways to make a strong hand. there were no raises pre-flop. he just called. that was reasonable; if he made the flush, it would be to his advantage to have plenty of opponents to contribute to the pot. five players were in. the flop brought ah-qc-10h -- giving him the ace-high straight plus four-to-the-nut-flush -- and a shot at a royal straight flush! there was a bet and a raise before the action got to him. he studied his hole cards and the board as if to reassure himself; then he just called. that was prudent. it looked like he had an invincible hand, so it made good sense to let the others do the raising for him and build "his pot." why chase out "contributors." besides, by not raising he kept his hand well concealed; and the pot was growing nicely without his raising. he could raise on the turn and or the river. the turn brought the deuce of spades. his ace-high straight looked awfully good! and he had a good chance of making the nut flush on the river. it would seem that he had a practically invincible hand or so you would have thought . another deuce. the river brought another deuce, putting a pair on the board. it was possible someone could have a full boat, but not likely. he would have to hold a deuce with another card that matched the board. for that matter, someone could have quad deuces -- also highly unlikely. the player in seat no. 1 came out betting. two people called. then seat no. 5 confidently raised, going all-in. all folded except seat no. 1. as seat no. 5 turned over his ace-high straight, seat no. 1 hesitated and then casually turned up his hole cards, announcing "full boat" as he revealed a 10 and a deuce unsuited. the ace-high straight was "dead in the water." he had indeed suffered a terrible beat a "bad beat." the chance of catching a third deuce on the river was approximately 4 %. furthermore, seat no. 1 was not the blind; so there was no real basis for his not folding a 10-2 unsuited before the flop. he certainly did not have a playable hand, yet he did call. possibly he might have folded if the pre-flop bet had been raised. but, from what i had observed of the player in seat no. 1, he didn't give up easily and probably would have stuck in the pot once he had made the initial bet. after making a pair of tens on the flop, and then twopair on the turn, he had reason to stay in till the end. needless to say, seat no. 5 was devastated. he quietly rose from his seat and announced: "i quit." then he left the casino. so readers, what's your opinion? george "the engineer" epstein is the author of "the greatest book of video strip poker for winners!" a retired engineer who received many industry and government awards and commendations, he continues to be active by consulting, editing an international technical newsletter, teaching an engineering course at ucla, and serving as an officer in a professional engineering society. one engineering society has a scholarship in george's honor. in writing his poker book, he applied the lessons learned while working as an engineer to solve problems. he is currently writing his next book on the four rules for success in life and living. he can be reached by e-mail: geps222 msn and Yahoo.
