By jennifer leong '00 with the end of the on-grounds interview season nearly upon us, surely we deserve a break from all that is hectic and chaotic. however, while we all wish we could enjoy a little peace and quiet, there is in fact no rest for the weary. just as law students enter the homestretch of on-grounds interviews, yet another wave of interviews is there to crash upon us: callbacks. senior assistant dean of career services w. stevenson hopson iv says this year differs from years past in that callbacks are coming fairly rapidly and earlier in the season. hopson said the surge of callbacks can be attributed to the current strength of the legal market. "it's not surprising, " hopson said. "we're hoping the market remains in good shape, " he added. despite the favorable market law students are entering, hopson says surviving the season of ongrounds interviews and callbacks can be an ominous task. "the next couple of weeks can be full of anxiety and frustration for [law students], " he said. hopson noted that over the course of the semester, second years will face "the highest anxiety level you will ever have to go through." to ease the stress and tension of the callback season, hopson has offered some advice. when offered a callback, hopson recommends acting quickly. "try to get on callbacks as soon as possible. it is in your best interest, and in the best interests of your classmates, " he said. hopson said that scheduling callbacks early may be advantageous, because those with early callbacks have a better chance of getting offers. overall, hopson said that 60% of the callbacks u.va. students receive result in offers. if you are offered a callback but want to cancel, hopson urges students to cancel as soon as possible as well. "not only is it good manners, but it may allow another virginia student to have that callback." hopson said canceling by phone is acceptable, or you can fax them a letter. for those students who have not yet received callbacks, hopson encourages them not to panic. "it's still early in the process, so don't be alarmed if you don't have any." he said that the majority of callbacks will come in the latter part of october, with many coming during the last week of the month. hopson says preparing for callbacks is very similar to preparing for on-grounds interviews. "the pivotal question is, `why would i be a good fit at this firm?'" he says. hopson advises students to have firm-specific questions prepared in order to reinforce your interest in that firm. "in order to show that you are interested in that firm, you must know what they do." it is important to ask about the structure of the firm, and it may help to ask what an associate does in a particular practice area of interest to you on a day-to-day basis. hopson says it is wholly appropriate to ask questions about topmorris advises students that if you are taken to lunch, the interview is still going on. "it's still part of the recruiting process, " morris said. hopson offered strategies for maneuvering the callback lunch: "when at a meal, be sure you engage and directly interact with everybody at that luncheon at least once, maybe twice, " hopson said. in addition, morris says it is important to watch what you order. "you don't have to worry about defending your credentials. you've made the first cut. now they're trying to figure out if they like you or not.
