You're sitting in a nine-handed no-limit hold'em game. action folds to a player in middle position who raises to five big blinds 5bb ; . two players call and now it's your turn to act on the button. abracadabra! you look at your hole cards, and you have k-k. on the surface, this situation looks simple. dig deeper, particularly into deeply stacked games, and you'll find that this is one of the trickiest situations to play in no-limit hold'em. take it for granted, and you'll be a losing player. the most important concept regarding reraising preflop is that reraising with a predictably tight distribution--like q-q or better--means that you're effectively playing your hand face-up when you reraise. announcing your huge hand potentially kills your profits in two ways: 1. ; your opponents won't give you any chips when he or she is hopelessly behind. 2. ; your opponents know that you'll yield huge implied odds after the flop. i say "potentially kills" because this consideration doesn't matter against inattentive players who, for example, are willing to go stacks with a-j on a jack-high flop against a tight preflop raiser. when stacks are shallow, say around 40bb, these considerations aren't disastrous. you don't have to worry about yielding huge implied odds to opponents with smaller pocket pairs or connectors because the size of the stacks easily allows you to reraise to an amount that denies your opponents sufficient implied odds. and in a short-stacked situation involving a raise and a few callers, this amount is usually "all-in." playing short stacked in a cash game can feel a lot like a tournament; the primary considerations in play are your opponents' hand distributions and calling distributions. a hand distribution is the set of all possible hands that an opponent might hold--for example, someone who raises from middle position might be on a hand distribution of [aa-88, ak-at, kq-kj]. a calling distribution is the set of all possible hands that an opponent will call with; therefore, it's a subset of his hand distribution. when stacks are deep, things are much more complicated. you need to balance getting value from your hand with not yielding sufficient implied odds. laying down overpairs in the face of heavy postflop action is necessary when there's a lot at risk. but if you're capable of such laydowns, highly skilled opponents will toss in a percentage of tricky bluffs against you, representing things such as phantom outs and sets. the bottom line: when you're deeply stacked against good players, you can't play your premium starting hands face-up. here are two ways exist to avoid playing your premium hole cards face-up: increase your reraising frequency, or don't reraise at all. both are viable approaches, and it's important to have both in your no-limit hold'em arsenal. however, if never reraising in a particular game will lead you to playing many tricky multiway pots, then increasing your reraising frequency will be the way to go. how to increase it is an entire issue of its own which i plan on covering in a future poker advice player article ; . no-limit hold'em is a game of many situations, but if we tear away all the complexity, we can see that just a few key concepts are at work. beneath everything, your preflop strategy regarding reraising needs to induce your opponents into making mathematical mistakes. and as long as your opponents aren't completely unobservant, your preflop reraising strategy needs to keep you ahead in the battle for information. the player who controls the battle for information is in a great position to control substantial profits. tony guerrera is the author of killer poker by the numbers and killer poker shorthanded with john vorhaus ; . visit him online at killerev , and check out his weekly show, killer poker analysis, on rounder's radio roundersradio ; fridays from 5: 00pm to 6: 00pm pacific time.
