Too many councils failing smoking challenge the smokefree action coalition, consisting of many of britain's medical and public health organisations, has released a major survey of smoking policies for every council in england and wales. the research shows that while some councils e.g. liverpool, manchester, poole and sheffield ; are leading the way on cutting smoking rates in their areas and working for smokefree towns and cities, most are still doing little more than banning smoking in their own offices. only a quarter of all councils are actively working with nhs primary care trusts and others to promote smokefree public places. smoking ban proposals unworkable, says cieh the chartered institute of environmental health has raised concern that a partial smoking ban would not protect employees and its complexity would make it unworkable, as the government published its consultation paper outlining proposals to curb smoking. responding to the publication of proposals by the department of health d0h ; , asking for the views of pub landlords and smokers alike, the cieh described having a non-smoking bar area within a smoking pub as unworkable. director of policy ian foulkes said: "it's the equivalent of a peeing and non-peeing area of a swimming pool." commenting on the wider proposals ian foulkes described them as "hideous" and said: "our members, who are regulators and people in the industry, both want the same thing simplicity. Mild crowd banter, the darlings of channel v were just a little too smooth. having said that, i can see why these guys are obvious crowd pleasers; with the kind of inoffensive rock that gets them played on channel ten commercials. but at the end of the night the raw lack of pretension from the vasco era stayed with me. moral of the story? if i wanted to hear evermore play their latest cd, i would have gone out and bought it. caitlin croucher loot anu arts centre, june 17-25 joe orton's 1966 black comedy "loot" is the story of hal, a sometime bank robber, and his accomplice dennis, trying to hide the loot from a bank heist they have just pulled. hal's mother has just died, the household is preparing for her funeral, and in a moment of gruesome genius hal and dennis hide the money in her coffin and stick her body, upside down, in the closet. "loot" garnered a lot of critical attention both applauding and appalled ; when it first appeared in london in the `60s. this production of the play is directed by anu theatre studies honours student adam maher; as well as being maher's honours production, it is the fourth offering from arts theatre "boom bang-a-bang""tell, ing moments" ; . the show is often amusing indeed, with orton's wonderfully black writing, how could it not be? and it treads the fine line between grotesquery and humour well. the sight gags with the dead body played with infinite patience by kerrie roberts ; are especially rewarding. design by quentin mitchell is superb and, coupled with the excellent fresco of london by cathie clelland, evokes the dismal middle-class `60s well. the costumes by cast member lucy goleby nicely underlines the archetypal characters at play in orton's farce the genuflecting black-widow fay goleby ; , the too-clever detective truscott steven kennedy ; , the inexperienced robbers hal michael beard ; and dennis jamie o'connell ; , and the mourning husband mr mcleavy janis dzelde ; . the cast attack the material with buckets of energy and pizzazz; unfortunately the energy is often misdirected. the humour in farce comes from the absurdity of the situation in which the characters are placed, and the jokes don't need to be underlined by the actors in delivery. the actors should play the characters as taking themselves seriously, which most of the cast bar the charmingly dunderheaded o'connell as dennis weren't doing. the other problem was that of diction a lot of the more subtle jokes were lost because the audience simply couldn't hear them properly, or because accent difficulties swallowed words entirely. these problems i felt were disappointing to the high quality of "loot" as a whole; a little more care taken with pacing and diction would have made the difference between an amusing show and a side-splitting one. naomi milthorpe the porkers los capitanes the gingers greenroom, saturday june 18 was it cold weather that had the greenroom filling with eager punters early in the evening, or did the return of the all-skanking, all-moshing men of pork have more to do with that? perhaps we'll never know, but when, young melbourne threepiece, the gingers kicked the night off, there was already a mighty mob of the curious and the expectant waiting to see what this all-grrl band had to offer. these teenage rock chicks didn't mess about and proceeded to rock out like only suzie quatro or joan jett could. sure, they were understandably nervous, but with obvious courage and commitment to their songs, the gathering multitude was supportive and showed appreciation. when los capitanes appeared, the crowd noticeably thickened. the current top dogs of ska in canberra have been labouring on that all-ages circuit and their efforts are paying off. there were probably more people singing the words, to obvious favourites `the underpants song' and `finding emo', among the punters than on the stage. the porkers were here to promote their new record, "live in nakanoshima" and if the new album goes anywhere near to capturing the energy and enthusiasm of their live show, then it's a wise investment for waiting out the long months between porkers' visits. opening with the irresistible `goin' off', they peppered their set with porky classics, including the new single and even an operation ivy cover. at one point, pete porker announced that the band is approaching their eighteenth year in existence. after tonight's show, it's obvious that's `18 years young'. to paraphrase an aging rock video presenter, do yourself a favour and get some pork on your fork. simon hobbs jebediah neon red jezebel anu, wednesday june 22 red jezebel hit the stage early, and while i had never heard these guys before, they pack a bit of a punch live. after sorting out a few distortion issues early in the piece, they played through a very tight set. definitely worth keeping an eye on. neon's performance provided me with one of the most bizarre canberra experiences of my three years in the nation's capital. neon were playing through their set with minimal fuss, with crowd opting for an apathetic distanced observation approach to the band. then, as neon launched into their final song, the brilliantly crafted `diziness', about 20 punters decided that neon were their new favourite band and surged into the vacant front of stage area and started gyrating to the sound of this infectious tune. i wasn't the only one stunned by the fickleness of the canberra crowd, with the lead singer forgetting what he was doing as he looked on in amazement and asking with bemusement `what are you doing?' after collecting his thoughts, they started the song again, played it to perfection and then walked off the stage, never to return. jebediah were in form on the night. it's been quite a few years since i saw them last, but they still play with the passion and excitement that i remember from back in the day. being a tenth birthday tour, most of the hits were there `animal', `military strongmen', `jerks of attention' and `teflon' with a few old b-sides thrown in for good measure. kevin mitchell's voice was showing a bit of strain from a heavy tour schedule, deteriorating as the show went on. his enthusiasm more than made up for his waning voice though. by the end of the show mitchell was so excited that he decided to get out there among the punters, guitar in hand and have a bit of a crowd surf. this provided a good opportunity for one over excited little vegemite to steal his mic and live out his own rock fantasy, albeit for only a fleeting moment. nothing revolutionary here, just a good time, good music and a band who still seem to be enjoying what they're doing. lok potticary.

Your opponents will probably call. in a wildly aggressive game you should just call, expecting someone to raise, others to call, so that you can reraise. online gaming poker also teaches you to plan for the entire hand. you use chess-type thinking "i'll do this, they will do that, and then i'll ." ; . you may sacrifice some profit on an early betting round to increase your profits for the entire hand. you can also sacrifice immediate profits for longer-term gains. for example, you may overplay the first few hands to create a "wild gambler" image that will get you more action on later hands. or you may be extremely tight at first to set up later bluffs. poker teaches you to set clear goals, think of what others will do, plan the actions that will move you toward your goals, and always know why you are doing something. good planning requires thinking of multiple contingencies. you should do many "what, if?" analyses. if the next card is a spade, you will bet. if it pairs the board, and joe bets, you will fold. if it seems innocuous and harriet bets, you will raise. most people don't consider nearly enough possibilities. when something unexpected happens, they have no idea what to do. planning in real life is so obviously valuable and so rarely done well that we don't need to give any examples. you know that you should do these "what if" analyses and plan your work, finances, and life in general, but that you probably don't plan well. poker teaches you how to handle deceptive people. many people are easily deceived. just look at those late night infomercials that promise you'll quickly get rich, become thin, or relieve all your aches and pains. the promoters wouldn't pay for them if nave people didn't buy them, and they are only the tip of the iceberg. as barnum put it, "there's a sucker born every minute." because poker players constantly try to bluff, sandbag, and generally deceive each other, you learn how to recognize when someone has a good hand, is on a draw to a good hand, or is flat out bluffing those skills can help you to spot and react effectively to deceptive people everywhere. a lot of people want to deceive you, and you should learn how to protect yourself. poker teaches you how to choose the best "games." "game" selection is critically important in both poker and life. poker teaches you how to evaluate yourself, the competition, and the overall situation, and then pick the "games" that are best for you. serious poker players recognize that the main reason they win or lose is the difference between their abilities and those of the competition. if they are better than the competition, they win. if they are weaker, they lose.
