Search questions, research problems or research problem areas. the set of interests may change in the process of participant-observation; the focus may and should be sharpened on certain phenomena whose relationships are under special study. the data gathered for the present study were analysed through a range of various stages. data analysis began to shape during the participant-observational fieldwork. the initial classification was based on the theoretical background, on problems and issues arising from foreign language education and it applications, partly based on introductory findings in the field, while familiarisation with ethnographic research literature went on at the same time. however, the main part of the analysis did not take place until after fieldwork. it is difficult to put all the stages into a chronological order, as a range of interrelated tasks overlapped in time and space. a new classification was based on sharpened research problems; an outliner or idea processor ; was made use of instead of cards and boxes traditionally used in ethnographic research ; . notes and events were continually compared with earlier notes and occurrences; new ideas and commentaries raised by field experiences or born from discussions with participating teachers became interlinked with theoretical views read in research literature. in sum, in the present study, categorisation was based on research literature, theoretical background, intuition, and my own experience as a teacher and teacher educator; further on the teachers' questionnaires; data were reread, new titles were added, while some old ones collapsed in the process of data analysis. it is to noted that in this study i already had some schematic outline categories in mind when fieldwork was originated. this, of course, guided and directed the classification of raw data gathered in the field. this approach slightly differs from the kind of ethnographic research in which the researcher has no advance classifying constructs but starts to observe everything that takes place in the field. in other words, the stance and the focus aimed at were somehow, albeit rather mistily, shaping up when the fieldwork period began. this led to some superstructures, such as organisation and management issues, allocation of computer resources, learning tasks and assignments, cooperation between students, between student s ; and teacher s ; , and, finally, collaboration between teacher s ; and myself. other superstructures included distribution of power or responsibility taking ; , language manipulation, and themes and topics, which were explored in more detail during the actual fieldwork period. at the same time, i attempted to keep a keen eye on possible new discoveries, in order not to lose sight of any significant phenomena, no matter how small or rare. even ethnographic data analysis has the danger of becoming mechanical and too rigid if all classification is based at an early stage on too strict a content analysis, which does not permit the researcher to see the importance of even an infrequently occurring event cf. e.g., goetz & lecompte 1984, 166.

Examining the social security situation in south africa. this presentation pointed at the need of comprehensive reform of the social security system, not only because of the poverty and inequality still existing in the country, but also because social security is a human right in south africa. he then moved on to showing why both internationally and in south africa social security has become more like poverty relief than social insurance and has opened up to the market and civil society, in order to play a role in its design, implementation and monitoring. he finished his talk by exploring how this necessitates a new conception of what human rights are and what direction they can take. the talks went on during the past academic year with the same success. the first talk for michaelmas 2003 was delivered by professor jon crowcroft of the computer laboratory. he focused on the design mistakes of the internet. this exciting talk has probably been the best way to initiate the second series of talks. professor crowcroft first revisited the goals that were set by arpa in the original requirements for sharing computer resources and showed how the original military goal of survivability at high cost has warped into a model of deployability at near to no cost. he then examined some of the emergent structures for the organisations that run the internet from standards, engineering and deployment, through to content delivery and applications software. he finally wrapped up with a brief look at work carried out in the computer lab which is seeking to address some of the shortfalls in these systems, in the area of wireless access, p2p and public computing, as well as associated problems of trust and accountability. it was an honour for the science colloquium to welcome during the same term professor peter weissberg bhf professor of cardiovascular medicine ; as a speaker. professor weissberg gave an excellent and pedagogical presentation on how to find a cure for cardiovascular disease. cardiovascular disease is the foremost cause of premature death and morbidity in industrialised societies and is increasing in developing countries. professor weissberg explained how the perception that atherosclerosis, the built up fatty deposits on the inside of arteries causing heart attacks and strokes, was a slowly progressing and degenerative disease that could not be modified, has given way to the realisation that it is, in fact, a highly dynamic process that is amenable to modification. he reviewed the cell biological basis for this change in perception and discussed how a greater understanding of the cellular pathogenesis of the disease is leading to diagnostic and therapeutic innovations that are likely to have a major impact on cardiovascular health in the future and clay poker chips cheap.

Instead, he chooses to introduce a familiar `native american' figure, "thought woman." however, she remains resistant to the mere switching of cultural codes in the process of being renamed. visually again set apart, indicating a break or silence, she insists on floating away, unbound by time and judgments made by robinson crusoe regarding her personality traits, and her imagined and perceived being. she speaks without the quotation marks, setting her being apart from ordinary conversation. yet, very concretely she is described as diving into the water, indicating her real presence. with her own sense of humor she suggests robinson may as well be friday and tries to convince him there is no point in retaining his identity, as it "couldn't be much fun" anyway, which suggests she is aware of both cultural identities. coyote, concerned about himself, and wittingly attempting to call the narrator "friday" now makes a joke, because he is bored. the narrator, in response, jokes back, by saying that the story will be finished in two days, which is funny, considering that thought woman has prior to the conversation articulated the fact, that it is wednesday. this sort of imaginative intercultural play is typical in the novel. 5.5 subversive mimicry and the privileged point of view and chips las poker vegas.

By tom lowry, november 14, 2005 business week steve jobs may have signaled to the world that television would never be the same after he announced the video ipod on oct. 12. but a group toiling in a suburban office west of knoxville, tenn., may have a more immediate impact on tv's future. programmers, engineers, and ad sales folks at scripps networks inc., a unit of e.w. scripps co. ; , which owns cable channels food network and home & garden television, were busy that day, as they have been for months, prepping for the launch of as many as 10 new channels in the next year or so -- on broadband. the first, coming to a high-speed internet service near you as early as december, is still unnamed, but it will use short, informational video clips and interactivity to bring all manner of advice about kitchen design to people on their computers. "these new channels will allow us to do something we couldn't do on [traditional tv], " says john lansing, president of scripps networks, "which is to dig even deeper into our specific topics." suddenly, broadband is opening the floodgates for a new kind of tv show -- only not on tv but online. in just the past few months some of the biggest tv names have announced new broadband channels, from mtv networks to comedy central ; to abc news. if you thought the 400 cable channels focusing on everything from golf to anime were already cutting niches thin, broadband tv is going a step further. besides kitchen design, scripps is preparing to roll out gardening and woodworking channels. walt disney co. ; has launched disney connection, a broadband outlet that offers games and video clips of disney characters to kids. oxygen networks' oh! baby channel offers tips to new parents, including a regular feature, kids behaving badly. mtv just appointed onetime web designer jason hirschhorn to be its first chief digital officer, overseeing broadband strategies. other tv titans, such as cbs broadcasting inc. ; and nbc universal inc., both with new media units, are preparing specialized high-speed offerings as well. "we want to be as agnostic as we can in delivering shows, sports, and news, " says bob wright, chairman of nbc universal. "that's why we've been so pleased to see how comfortable people are in getting programs in new ways." new buzz machine it has the makings of another internet gold rush. with improved speeds and video quality online, not to mention broadband's growing reach estimated conservatively to be in million u.s. homes by yearend ; , tv executives are rushing to connect with younger audiences that are less and less riveted to traditional tv. getting a foothold on the internet, especially if it creates buzz, is also a way to recapture ad dollars that have migrated away from the 30-second tv spot. on the web, ads can be positioned strategically next to programming and measured with greater accuracy. broadband may also allow executives, bound by the costs and the creative parameters of bigtime tv, to take more chances. "this new distribution platform gives content creators a direct relationship with consumers without having to go through a [regional] cable or satellite carrier, " says jeremy allaire, founder of internet tv service company brightcove, which has been hired by viacom ; , a&e television networks, and oxygen networks to help them create new broadband channels. low-cost pilots tv execs will need that kind of freedom as they go up against a slew of upstarts that are creating their own channels. and why not? the barriers to entry are incredibly low vs. tv. essentially, if you have a 0 video camera and the software to create a site, you're in business. even sophisticated tv channels are able to launch some broadband outlets for under million. "the best programming is still going to be on the next few years, " says richard greenfield, an analyst at fulcrum global partners llc. "but after that, who knows?" watching a broadband channel, at least in these early days, is an altogether different experience from kicking back in the living room for a couple of hours. these.
Pennsylvania game commission wildlife conservation officers are investigating the cause of death of more than 50 white-tailed deer in greene and washington counties. game commission biologists recently submitted samples for testing from four deer three males and one female ; to the southeastern cooperative wildlife disease study at the university of georgia and penn state university animal diagnostics laboratory, and continue to gather information about other dead deer being found. once the results are available, the game commission plans to release the findings to the public. "while we must wait for test results to confirm just what caused these deer to die, at this time, we are suspecting that the deer died of epizootic hemorrhagic disease ehd ; , based on fields signs that we are seeing, " said dr. walter cottrell, game commission wildlife veterinarian. in 2002, ehd was confirmed in the southwest corner of pennsylvania. that same year, ehd was confirmed in maryland, ohio, virginia and wisconsin. ehd is one of the most common diseases among white-tailed deer in the united states, and is contracted by the bite of insects called "biting midges." ehd usually kills the animal within five to 10 days, and is not spread from deer to deer. while ehd is not infectious to humans, deer displaying severe symptoms of ehd may not be suitable for consumption. cottrell stressed that even though some ehd symptoms are similar to those of chronic wasting disease cwd ; --such as unconsciousness and a loss of fear of humans--there is no relationship between ehd and cwd. cottrell also pointed out that ehd should be curtailed with the first hard frost, which will kill the insects that may be spreading the disease. he noted that ehd, unlike cwd, is a seasonal disease and the affected local deer herd can rebound quickly and free video strip poker.

Captain crawley looked savagely at the lieutenant out of his little blue eyes, and watched him when he went up to resume his acquaintance with the fair governess. her conduct must have relieved crawley if there was any jealousy in the bosom of that life-guardsman. when the young men went upstairs, and after osborne's introduction to miss crawley, he walked up to rebecca with a patronising, easy swagger. he was going to be kind to her and protect her. he would even shake hands with her, as a friend of amelia's; and saying, `ah, miss sharp! how-dy-doo?' held out his left hand towards her, expecting that she would be quite confounded at the honour. miss sharp put out her right forefinger, and gave him a little nod, so cool and killing, that rawdon crawley, watching the operations from the other room, could hardly restrain his laughter as he saw the lieutenant's entire discomfiture; the start he gave, the pause, and the perfect clumsiness with which he at length condescended to take the finger which was offered for his embrace. `she'd beat the devil, by jove!' the captain said, in a rapture; and the lieutenant, by way of beginning the conversation, agreeably asked rebecca how she liked her new place. 271 of 1396 and adult strip poker.

First and foremost i want to thank our loyal vendors who came out and set up in extremely adverse weather. i also want to thank the volunteers who donated their time and efforts to ensure that the pac would have the funds to continue to protect out rights, as motorcyclists. we had a good turnout after expenses we were able to deposit over , 000 in the pac account. again, thank you all. now i would like to address an incident that occurred during the course of the event. after allowing time for emotions to be removed from the event, i consulted with the chairman of the pac and this is how we saw how the events unfolded. "vendor #1's" spot and requested they leave. during the course of the conversation, a picture of our state director surrounded by a toilet seat was observed on the table of "vendor #1". "vendor #1" was asked to remove his childish protest. a heated discussion regarding this matter then ensued. after "vendor #1" removed the item, we again left the area. at this time we had a conversation with the police officer present, at the event. he asked us what we wanted to do and we told him we would like "vendor #1" to leave. he then said he would go and talk to them. in the mean time "vendor #2", who thought "vendor #1" had paid for "vendor #2's spot, made a small deposit on her spot and arrangements, with registration, to later pay the remainder of her spot. in my opinion, "vendor #1's" `planned behavior' was not only intended to disrupt the event but also intended to undermine the ability of abate to be effective in protecting the rights of the motorcycling public. also, because of disrupting the event, they would seriously hinder the pac's ability to generate the needed funds to lobby for those rights. to anyone who felt that "vendor #1" was asked to leave because of their bitter, childish attempt to exercise their first amendment rights, this was not the case. "vendor #1", after repeated requests to quit interfering in our conversations and the performance of our duties, was asked to leave, after we unsuccessfully attempted to return their registration fee, due to their disruptive and immature behavior. finally, i feel sympathy for "vendor #2". she was there to promote an event that, in the long run, would ultimately assist abate's and the pac's efforts to influence our legislator's in passing legislation that would benefit the rights of the motorcycling public. i wonder; what kind of thought process one would have to use a friend and jeopardize the promotion of an event that would ultimately benefit everyone concerned.

I saw jake moses, a travelling shoe salesman, lose ten trunks of shoes. i saw a bank teller trapped with marked money he had stolen from the bank; a postmaster go to jail for shortages at the post office. horses, cattle, hogs, wagons, buggies, farming implements, grain, sawmills - all sold to play poker. new owners showed up at the sawmills, feed and grocery stores. yardley's stories are dramatic, simple and loving, like the folk tales collected by the brothers grimm. and in a way, this is what they are: the mythology of america on the move, the winners winning, the losers going under. each story illustrates a particular form of the game -draw, stud and some of their variations - and includes yardley's peculiarly stringent rules for winning. these rules themselves illustrate another aspect of the cynical reality beneath the american dream. the classical game yardley advocates is not only conservative, it is also deeply pessimistic. 'i do not believe in luck - ' he says, 'only in the immutable law of averages.' in his style of chips poker used there is no room for play in any of the frivolous senses of the word. frivolity is, quite simply, too expensive. what his advice amounts to is, assume the worst, believe no one and make your move only when you are certain that you are either unbeatable or have, at worst, exceptionally good odds in your favour. this is an iron-clad system when playing against weak players who do not understand the odds or the endless finesses possible. against strong players who know 'the book' and have the necessary discipline it may be less immediately effective, since they will recognize your tactics and simply fold when you bet. that, however, is not yardley's business. he was a purist writing for embryo purists, concerned only with the rules and values of classical poker. 'classical' may seem an inflated word for a rather shady pastime. yet it is wholly appropriate, for there is a kind of strict beauty in the game when it is played in this way -every detail accounted for, every nuance recognized. the excitement has nothing to do with the passive, masochistic thrill of roulette; it is closer to the tension of chess, the most purely intellectual of all games. at a certain shared level of skill, poker, like chess, is a psychological combat. it depends finally on your insight into your opponent's state of mind and how it will affect his willingness to call or raise or fold. is he depressed or riding high? what is his financial position, off the table as well as on? what are his vanities, his fears? at its best, poker is a contest of wills and personalities, one end of which is power. you want to be able to predict, even to dictate, how the other players will respond to each of your moves. this interplay between the personalities round a poker table and the combination of cynicism and insight necessary to win is where the real fascination of the game lies. perhaps this is why yardley's book continued to hold me, even after i had assimilated his advice and had a working knowledge of the percentages. when i first picked it up i was ignorant not only in the ways of poker. i also had the deep ignorance which often goes with excessive education. i had been through the most high-minded academic mill: a monastic public school, oxford, princeton, harvard. i had read a vast number of books and written a couple of my own. yet in practice i was naive to a degree which still, nearly twenty years later, makes me blush. i had a marriage 1 could not handle, a childish desire to be loved by the whole world, and an equally childish conviction that everything would turn out all right in the end. when it didn't i was -simply and profoundly outraged. i had lived my life as i played poker, recklessly and.

With cooler weather come leaves. raking leaves is a necessary chore that should be done every year, says dr. obadiah njue, extension horticulture specialist at pine bluff uapb ; cooperative extension program. left on lawns over the winter, the leaves smother the grass, he says. raked leaves add to yard waste which accounts for 15 percent to 20 percent of material going into landfills national. dr. njue suggests composting as a viable alternative. composted leaves and other yard wastes grass clippings, yard trimmings, vegetable and fruit scraps, coffee grounds, tea leaves and wood chips are high in organic matter and are a valuable soil amendment, he says. composting is a fairly easy process achieved through the work of a wide variety of organisms found naturally in organic matter. the leaves waste pile is invaded and broken down first by bacteria, then fungi, followed by protozoans and a number of invertebrates that include millipedes, centipedes, beetles and worms to complete the process. these living organisms need air, water and nutrients, says dr. njue. bacteria and fungi work best when the pile is damp but not soaked. essential nutrients for bacteria and fungi include carbon and nitrogen. carbon or carbohydrates supply energy to soil organisms, and nitrogen or protein help the composting organisms grow, breed and multiply. a mix of two parts carbon browns ; and one part nitrogen greens ; is a good recipe for the microorganisms and accelerates the composting process. the decomposing bacteria work best at temperatures between 110 and 160 degrees fahrenheit. these temperatures are generated by the composting process. the hotter the pile, the faster the composting process. the carbon browns ; sources include dry leaves and grass, twigs, straw, wood chips and shredded newspaper. nitrogen greens ; sources include green leaves, fresh grass clippings, coffee and tea wastes, vegetable and fruit scraps, animal manure and fresh hedge trimmings. increasing the surface area of the waste increases the decomposition process. you can increase surface area by shredding leaves using a mower ; and chopping other yard wastes. do not add diseased plants, weeds with seeds, pet wastes, dead animals, meat scraps, dairy products, grease, cooking oil or oily food to the compost pile. building the compost pile dr. njue advises layering browns and greens in a compost pile and suggests the following layering plan. layer 1: 4 to inches of chopped brash and other coarse material to allow air circulation around the base of the pile. layer 2 browns ; : 2 to inches of a mix of dry leaves, grass twigs, straw, wood chips and shredded newspaper. shredding leaves and chopping garden wastes speeds up the composting process. layer 3 greens ; : 1 to inches of a mix of green leaves, fresh grass clippings, coffee and or tea wastes, vegetable and fruit scraps, animal manure and fresh hedge trimmings. layer 4 optional ; : 1 inch of soil to add microorganinisms to the pile. repeat layers 2, 3 and 4 to increase the size of your pile. the pile may take six to 16 months to compost. turning the pile at least once a month speeds up the process. if materials and layering are out of balance, the pile may not decompose as expected, says dr. njue who provides the following table of possible symptoms, problems and solutions. -- carol sanders.
